Prevenar

Were you looking for information about Prevnar? Prevenar is a common misspelling of Prevnar.

(Prevnar is no longer available, as it has been replaced by a "new-and-improved" version. Please see Prevnar 13 for more information about the newer vaccine.)

In order to prevent invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), infants and toddlers are given Prevnar® (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine).

The vaccine is ideally given in four doses, although the exact vaccination schedule will vary depending on the age of the child at the first dose. Prevnar is not only effective at preventing IPD; it can also help prevent ear infections caused by certain strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. Side effects that have been reported with this vaccine include drowsiness, fever, and irritability.
