Vaccines to Prevent Meningitis
There are many types of meningitis, so it's not surprising that several vaccines are available to help prevent the condition. The meningitis vaccines currently available include:
- The Hib vaccine designed to prevent infection due to Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
- Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (MPSV4 or Menomune®)
- Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4 or Menactra™)
- A new meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-CRM or Menveo®).
There is also a newly licensed vaccine that appears to be effective for the prevention of pneumococcal infections in infants.
